Novodevichiy Convent

all_img_novodev.jpg Novodevichiy Convent was founded to the order of Moscow great prince Vasiliy III in 1524 to commemorate the regaining of Town Smolensk from Lithuanian hold. The architectural ensemble of the convent assumed its final shape by the end of XVII century.  The pearl of the Convent is the Our Lady of Smolensk Cathedral is the earliest stone building on its territory. Cathedral houses unequalled fresco of XVI century and splendid carved iconostasis with holy images that have been preserved. On grounds of the convet there is a cementery where royal family members, writers, and public figures are buried.

Open daily 10:00 – 17:30 Closed Thursday, first Monday of the month
